Welcome to the first post on our new blog! We are going to use the blog to keep you up to date with what is happening on the farm as well as special events which are taking place locally, hopefully giving you a better idea of the range of activities available when staying with us. If you have any suggestions or comments about our blog please let us know!
At Perkins Lodge Farm we produce wheat, oats, barley and oilseed rape as well as running a beef herd of around 90 cows. Harvest time starts in July and runs through to the end of August so if you have children that would like to watch the combine harvester this is the ideal time of year to visit. The wheat and oats are sold to companies making breakfast cereals and biscuits whilst the oilseed rape is crushed to produce cooking oil, bio-fuel and animal feed.
Our cows calve between March and May and all of the calves are reared on our farm. We sell half of them to a local butcher who supplies many of the local shops, pubs and restaurants in the area and the rest are sold to the major supermarkets. If you visit us during calving time you will see the calves playing in the fields and if you're really lucky you may see one being born too! We often show people around the farm so if you have children or are just interested yourself we would be pleased to show you where your food comes from and how it is produced.
Our cottages are at the heart of our farm and whilst staying with us you will see the day to day activities taking place. Whether it’s a cow looking in the cottage window as she moves fields or the tractor and trailer carting the harvest to the shed there is always something different to see at Meadowview Cottages and we would love to share it with you.
